Bug-Out Bag
Packing List
A complete list optimized for weight, redundancy, and real-world use β not survival fantasy.
Built on FEMA's all-hazards framework and field-tested gear selection. Target pack weight: 25β35 lbs loaded.
The Bag
Target: 25β35 lbs loaded for adults. Under 20 lbs for 50+ or those with joint issues.
Water
Bug-out bags focus on purification over storage β you cannot carry 3 gallons.
Food
Aim for 1,800β2,500 calories/day. Prioritize calorie density over volume.
Shelter & Sleep
You must be able to stay warm and dry independently of any building.
Fire & Light
Three independent ignition methods β never rely on just one.
Navigation
Do not rely on your phone. Cell towers fail. GPS depends on charged batteries.
First Aid
Compact and organized. You need to find what you need fast under stress.
Clothing
Dress for the worst weather you might encounter en route β not your destination.
Tools & Multi-Use
Every item should serve at least two purposes. Redundancy without weight.
Documents & Cash
Everything in a waterproof Ziploc or dry bag. You cannot recover these if lost.
Communication & Signaling
Assume cell service is down. Plan for offline communication from day one.
Field Notes from Josh
- ✓ Pack weight matters more than completeness. A bag you can't carry is useless. Build to 25β35 lbs max, then optimize. You can always cache gear along your route.
- ✓ Know your routes before you need them. Drive all three of your bug-out routes. Mark water sources on your map. Identify rally points your whole household knows by memory.
- ✓ Every item earns its weight. If something only does one thing, it better do that one thing exceptionally well. Multi-use items get priority.
- ✓ Test it before you need it. Do a 5-mile hike with your loaded bag. Cook a meal from it. Sleep in the shelter. Discover the problems now.
- ✓ Refresh every 6 months. Rotate food, check batteries and medications, re-evaluate clothing for seasonal changes. Set a calendar reminder.
