Emergency Contacts

Out-of-Area Contact (critical): Designate one person outside your region. Local lines jam during disasters β€” it's often easier to reach someone far away. Everyone in your household calls this person first to check in.

Meeting Places

1 Near Home

Use if you can't go inside β€” e.g., front sidewalk, neighbor's driveway

2 Near Neighborhood

Use if you can't return to your block β€” e.g., community park, fire station

3 Away from Area

Use if you must leave the region entirely β€” e.g., relative's home, hotel

Utilities & Home

Gas Shutoff

Know where your meter is and keep a wrench nearby. Only turn it off if you smell gas or are ordered to.

Water Shutoff

Main shutoff is usually near the water meter at the street or in a utility room.

Electricity Shutoff

Locate your breaker panel. Know which breaker controls which area of the house.

Important Documents

Note where originals and copies are stored β€” not the documents themselves.

Communication Plan

Write your household's specific triggers for each decision.

Making This Plan Work

  • Practice it twice a year. Walk your household through the plan every 6 months. Kids especially need to hear it out loud, not just see it posted.
  • Post it and distribute it. One copy on the fridge, one in each vehicle, one in each go-bag. A plan no one can find is no plan.
  • Call your out-of-area contact now. Tell them they're your designated contact. Confirm their number works. Make sure they know what you'll need from them.
  • Review after any major life change. New home, new family member, new job location, new medical condition β€” update the plan immediately.
